MOTH ORCHIDS

Wintertime is a wonderful time to grow orchids as many of them come into bloom over the winter months. The easiest orchid to grow for most homeowners is the moth orchid, or Phalaenopsis. This orchid grows best at normal household temperatures, preferring temperatures between 65 – 75 degrees. The moth orchid needs bright light but not direct sun, as direct sun exposure can burn its leaves.

Moth orchids should not be planted in soil but grow well in a wood bark medium. To water, hold the plant directly over a bucket or sink and water the bark until water runs out the bottom. Avoid getting water in the crown of the orchid. Watering once or twice a week is usually sufficient, especially in winter. Contrary to popular marketing, it is NOT a good idea to water any orchid with ice cubes.

Fertilizing your orchid is important. Fertilizers formulated for orchids are readily available. It is important to follow the directions on the label in order to apply fertilizer correctly.

Moth orchids have the ability to rebloom. After the last flower falls from the flowering stem, cut the flower stem back about halfway. This will often stimulate the orchid to produce a second flowering branch from the first. It is not unusual to have a moth orchid stay in bloom for several months.

What's in Bloom at Fellows Riverside Gardens?

Winter brings a sparkling new look to the Gardens. A blanket of newly fallen snow turns the Gardens into a winter wonderland. Red berries sparkle on the many holly trees, while crabapple trees are heavily laden with red and yellow fruits. Birds are vocal and abundant as they search for fruits and seeds to eat. The South Terrace offers a beautiful, unrivaled view of Lake Glacier in its icy splendor. Visit the Davis Center to feel transported to the tropics by the beauty and variety of orchids on display during the JEWELS OF WINTER orchid exhibit, now through March 18th. Visit Fellows Riverside Gardens and experience the beauty of nature during in winter.

GOT BATTERIES?

Batteries come in all shapes and sizes for a multitude of applications. Rechargeables are best used to support high-drain devices like electric toothbrushes, power tools and laptops, while single-use batteries best power slower-drain gadgets like flashlights, wall clocks and smoke detectors.

Americans purchase nearly 3 billion dry-cell batteries every year to power radios, toys, cell phones, watches, laptop computers and portable power tools, and nearly one in five dry-cell batteries purchased in the U.S. is rechargeable.

Rechargeable batteries contain heavy metals, such as lead and cadmium, and other ingredients that are important to keep out of landfills. Recycling them prevents potential pollution and recovers valuable materials for reuse.

The most valuable, and easily extracted, resource that typical single-use batteries contain is steel, which is utilized in their casings. The chemicals within are more difficult to manage and require more sophisticated technologies to remove.

Regardless of the type of batteries you are disposing of, please remember to recycle them and keep our earth cleaner and greener!

Winter Road Closings

Effective Monday, December 12, the following roads in Mill Creek Park will be closed to vehicular traffic for the winter:
  • Chestnut Hill Drive, between Canfield Road and the Kirkmere Spur
  • High Drive, between the Kirkmere Spur and West Cohasset Drive
  • Calvary Run Drive, between Belle Vista Avenue and Milton Avenue

When snow and ice create slippery conditions, roadways with limited shoulders, lack of guardrails, and steep grades become increasingly hazardous for motorists.  While closed to vehicular traffic, these roads are available for various recreational uses, such as hiking, bicycling, cross country skiing and sledding. Additional benefits of the road closures include cost savings associated with snow/ice removal as well as a reduction of negative environmental impacts from deicing salt.
All roads will reopen in the spring when weather permits.  For more information, call the Mill Creek MetroParks Administrative Office at 330-702-3000.
